What is a CS2 retake server?

The short version: it is a server that skips straight to the part of the round everyone actually wants to practise.

A retake server puts you into a Counter-Strike 2 round that has already started. The bomb is planted, the counter-terrorists spawn near the site with a randomised buy, the terrorists are holding it, and one side has to win the post-plant. When the round ends, teams shuffle, loadouts reroll and it happens again — usually a new round every thirty to forty seconds.

That density is the whole point. In a matchmaking game you might play four or five genuine retakes in forty minutes. On a retake server you play forty. Every one of them is a live rehearsal of the situations that decide real games: the default plant on A Mirage, the wrap through connector, the CT retake off a molotov.

Why people play retake

It is not a substitute for scrims or matchmaking. Retake trains one slice of the game very hard and ignores the rest — economy, opening picks, mid-round calls. Treat it as the warm-up and the mechanical rep, not the whole diet.

How to connect to a retake server

Every listing in the directory gives you two ways in.

  1. Connect button. Opens the server through Steam and launches CS2 into it. Quickest route if the game is already installed.
  2. Copy IP. Copies the full console command, which looks like this:
connect 45.10.0.10:27015

To use it, enable the developer console first: Settings → Game → Enable Developer Console → Yes. Then press ~ in game, paste the command and press enter.

If the server needs a password, the command takes it as a second step:

password yourpassword
connect 45.10.0.10:27015

Picking the right server

Two things matter more than everything else on the card:

Player count is the third: a server sitting at 2/10 will not fill both sides of a retake properly, so look for something at least half full.

How to host your own retake server

Broadly, you need three things.

  1. A machine with good routing. A cheap VPS in a datacentre near your player base beats a powerful box far away. Retake is not CPU hungry at 10–12 slots, but it is very sensitive to network quality.
  2. A CS2 dedicated server. Installed through SteamCMD, with a Game Server Login Token from Valve so the server is publicly listed.
  3. A retake plugin. The dedicated server on its own only runs standard game modes. The retake logic — spawn placement, team balance, randomised loadouts, round reset — comes from a community plugin running on Metamod and CounterStrikeSharp.

Budget an evening for the first setup and expect to spend most of it on spawn tuning rather than installation. Spawn quality is what separates a retake server people return to from one they leave after two rounds.

Once it is running, add it to the directory — listing is free and takes about a minute.

Retake, execute and deathmatch — what is the difference

Most players who want more rounds per hour end up on retake, because it is the only one of the three that keeps a real objective, real utility and real team play in a short loop.
